There comes a time when something vulnerable – perhaps a friend, a way of life, or even a historic building – is threatened. A building isn’t typically considered a friend, but in the over 200 years since Ebenezer Pope donated to the people of Sterling the land upon which our 1835 Town Hall stands, this historic building has been that friend to countless individuals, activities, and organizations.
We’re fortunate to still live in a society where helping a friend in need is a proud tradition. The continued promise and longevity of our 1835 Town Hall is now at a tipping point. Competing for acknowledgement of its continuing usage and historic importance, and funding to repair the building’s roof to set it on a future course, can be a tough sell at Town Meeting unless the townspeople begin to appreciate its distinct place in Sterling’s history, and the treasure that is at threat of loss.
This is the time to thoughtfully consider what’s at stake, the potential loss through neglect (or worse) to Sterling’s center, and appreciation for its place in our history. Please attend and vote Yes at Town Meeting for Article 16. There will be future generations who thank us.
